“Without a sense of urgency, desire loses it’s value”. ~Jim Rohn

I love this quote, stated by one of the most celebrated personal-development teachers of all time.

Much of my life has centered around food.

My mom is a great cook, and I still crave her salmon croquettes, minestrone soup, and her famed pork spareribs with sauerkraut.  That’s right, nothing fancy.  Just pure comfort and home-cooked goodness.

I’m most thankful for how my mom made dinner mandatory family time.  Even when she was a single-mom of three, we shared the day’s events over the evening meal.  When she re-married, and two more siblings came along, dinner was a time to come together and BE a family.  We told stories and laughed.  We celebrated victorious soccer games or perfect trumpet recitals.  And, like most kids, we got into trouble for laughing during grace or launching the world’s biggest food fight.

It was real life, it was family, and it showed me how food brings people together in meaningful ways. Continue reading »

Are you overly cautious?

Go ahead, admit it.  Not in a cavalier way, but more of an admission that says, “Yes, this is what I do, I know it’s compromising, and I’m open to transforming this behavior.”

I can be overly cautious.

It’s okay to be this way at times, but mostly it’s just an impedance.  Because too much caution indicates fear.  And  when I buy into fear, I want to control the momentum of the universe by manipulating situations so that they unfold in a safe and friendly manner. Continue reading »

I owe you all an apology.

I thought I’d scheduled my blog to go out yesterday, but it doesn’t appear to have made it.  I was traveling home from Mexico, after spending 10 days in the Copper Canyon region preparing for and then running (and to be fair, also walking and hiking) a 50-mile race.

Yes, 50 miles.

I finished in 12.5 hours to make the 13-hour cut off, which I feel pretty darn great about.  I’m also super tired and sore, and my calves are so swollen I can’t see my ankles.  Good stuff, eh?  Taking my JuicePlus+, drinking lots of water, and hoping for a good night sleep in my very soft bed (the mattresses in Mexico have much to be desired – imagine bumpy concrete). “Do you think I’m fat?”.

Has your child ever asked you this question?

If so, did you feel prepared to answer?

Many parents don’t feel prepared.  It’s a tough topic, and often times we’re not sure how to address it.

I got very clear to this last night when it came up in my own family. Continue reading »

We all know that a meal at a nice restaurant is more expensive than cooking at home. You may also know that daily fast-food meals add up quickly, and there are of course the inherent health consequences to choosing drive-thru dinners.

What you might not know, is that in your efforts to save money by eating at home, you can fall trap to some added costs that keep the grocery bills equally high. Things like frozen meals, bottled salad dressing, and ingredients that you only use once, can be a total money pit.

Last night we made a wonderful meal at home that cost less than $10. Continue reading »
