Hundreds of single moms and their children flooded into the hallways and foyers. They quickly dropped off their children in the free childcare area. They stood in line and chatted anxiously about what the night could possibly behold. It had been all the buzz for months now. And then………..it was time.
The doors flew open and the moms were greeted with far more than they could have thought or imagined. Red roses were being handed out by a man wearing a black tuxedo. Tables were prepared with fine black linens, red gift bags, and beautiful cakes as centerpieces. Christmas music was aplenty and the ladies giggled with excitement as they sat about the room. They were served a traditional Christmas meal, by men dressed in black and white. We opened the night with a guest singer, Summer Tullier, who brought the house down, with a beautiful rendition of “Who Could Imagine a King?”
We added a hilarious skit — an infomercial of ”Solve your Mamma-Drama Spray” — and the crowd roared with laughter. Our special guest speaker, Mike Haman, brought a powerful message of hope and encouragement for the moms, as he often referred to them as “the unsung heroes of our day.” As we brought the evening to a close, I shared some final thoughts on what 2010 has meant to HPC Single Moms and the record growth we’ve experienced (85 new faces in 90 days). And…..every mom was blessed with gift – ranging from free spa passes, massages, hair cuts, Walmart and Target cards, free bowling, skating & much, much more.
We are certain that God was smiling down on the night as moms walked away feeling “full”. We’ve had responses, such as “I once was lost, but now I’m found. Thank God for HPC Single Moms.” and “We laughed and we cried. It was AMAZING!” and many others too personal to share.
Thank God for Healing Place Church’s generosity pastored by Dino and Delynn Rizzo, the vision to serve others, and the generosity of the community. Everything was free and women were blessed, as we opened up one of the largest Single Moms Events in the state.
Now, that’s what Christmas is all about — putting words into action and serving those who often feel they are forgotten.
