Happy Independence Day!

Today while we celebrate the freedoms that we have as Americans, also let us celebrate the independence we have as single parents. Some of us have chosen this independence, while some of us were not given the choice. Either way, please take a few minutes today to ponder the blessings of freedom we have as single parents.

The freedom from being in a loveless relationship.

The freedom from the arguing, the fighting, the silent treatment, and for some, the freedom from abuse.

The freedom from saying “I’m sorry,” when you really aren’t.

The freedom of spontaneity.

The freedom to raise your child with positive influences.

The freedom to show your child that sometimes apart is better.

The freedom to not have dinner on the table at 6, or the freedom to have dinner on the table at 6…it’s your choice.

The freedom to show your child that sometimes one is stronger than two.

The freedom to feel safe in your own home.

The freedom to stand up for what you believe.

The freedom to show your child that you alone can provide the love of a mother and a father.

And…the freedom to be happy alone.

The first 4th of July I celebrated after leaving my son’s father, I decided that Independence Day would be my own personal holiday from that point on. It had a new meaning to me. I hope that despite the situation that led to you becoming a single parent, that you find your own special meaning in Independence Day. Today while you are barbecuing  and lighting off fireworks and celebrating America, cheers yourself either out loud or silently, for being an independent single parent and all of the freedoms that you enjoy!
