A couple weeks ago, I was listening to a radio personality talk about the piece that “60 minutes” did on the large percentage of NFL players that come from American Samoa. Unfortunately, despite thinking to myself that it would be interesting to tune in for that story, I didn’t.

However, this radio personality broke it down for me.

In the end, his take was, the conditions that these guys in American Samoa learn how to, and play football in, cause them to be tougher than many other football players that come from the mainland. Continue reading »

Yep, it’s finally official.  I’m a soccer mom.  But you won’t find me driving a mini van any time soon.  No sir-e-bob.  Not me.

As I’m sitting on the soccer field with all the other parents at 9a on a Saturday morning watching the little red headed flash darting across the field and accidentally kicking the crap out of a bouncy pony tail wearing little blondie 7 year old, I couldn’t help but think there was a day when I was just walking into an after hours party around that time.  And now here I am doing my cheerleading fist pumps in the air for St. Vincents (her school).

There are times, like I’m sure most parents when I am bummed that I don’t get to go to something or have the freedom to just do what I want, when I want, all the time because now I have a little person who requires a good portion of my time.  I use to be quite the goer outer.  Every weekend tearing it up in some club.  I still love to go out dancing and actually feel like my body is going to explode with all the built up energy if I don’t go out dancing at least once a month.  I have been a night owl for a long time and I don’t see that ending any time soon. On Children
Kahlil Gibran

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.

My 5-year-old son just fell asleep minutes after finishing his dinner this Sunday evening after a long, adventurous birthday weekend.  He was flat worn out and crashed early, thankfully, as it provided an extra 30 minutes in my schedule tonight to be able to write this post.

Unless you are a parent, you just don’t get that last sentence.  If your child’s bedtime is usually 7:30pm and they fall asleep for some reason at 6:45pm, it’s like you have been given this miraculous gift of time that didn’t even exist before.  It’s a total freebie.

Sometimes we use this gift to dive into something really productive.  Sometimes, though, we hit our favorite spot in the house, get comfy, pour a nice glass of wine and relax into a state of nothingness. Continue reading »
