Here I am the day before Christmas and believe it or not I am ready. I guess that after doing this for so long as a single dad I kind of have the routine down. Oh, I did take a few short cuts this year. Gone are the Griswold Christmas light displays of years past. I now have two teenagers so getting the house ready has been divided by three instead of just me. Shopping has also been easier. What is it about teenagers that all they want are gift cards? I think as the year goes on, and my kids tell me that they need cash I am going to whip out a gift card and see what they think. I did do the one thing all parents do and that is buy them a gift that I believe they will cherish for years. Why do I have this sneaking suspicion that the gift is eventually going to end up in the same place as all those other cherished gifts, in the storage room. Regardless, it makes me feel good and it will make for good conversations years from now when they have their own children.
With that said I still want my kids to remember that this season is not all about gifts, candies, cookies and fun., It is about the birth of Jesus Christ. It is as season to remember why we are here and that we are loved. I have always believed that Jack and Michaela are God’s children. I have just been given the responsibility to raise them in a way that will make God proud. As we approach the day that represents the birth of Christ let us all remember that God wants us to succeed at being a good parent. Never give up, never stop believing in yourself, and never forget that we are not alone on this journey.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of you……
